Barack Obama, needless to say, is an epitomy of the American promise – the promise that lured people like me from the distant shores of poorer nations, looking for a way in, without the benefit of privileged inheritance. His father is African, his mother is White. He was raised by his grandmother, and did not inherit riches, nor aristocracy.
Yet with his ability to inspire people, and his own sheer determination, he has become the President Elect of a nation that was racially segregated only 40 years ago.
My hope for the coming years is that there will be no White America, there will no black (or brown) America, but only the United States of America, redeeming that pledge etched on Ellis Island.
